The CSOSUN Alliance on Thursday the 14th of March 2019, held an event to celebrate Zambia’s indigenous foods as well as to usher in champions who will be advocates for local and diverse foods.
CSO-SUN Alliance was established in 2012 as a movement of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) working to raise the profile of nutrition on the national development agenda. CSOSUN was founded as a result of the need for a multi-stakeholder response to addressing the nutrition challenge in Zambia through the Scaling Up Nutrition Movement. It is a part of the Global Scaling up Nutrition (SUN) movement founded on the principle that all people have the right to food and good nutrition. Since its establishment, it has convened 42 members including local CSOs and international NGOs, making it one of the most influential civil society organisations working in any arena in Zambia. CSO-SUN is a highly effective advocacy platform that works across multiple sectors in an effort to end malnutrition. It makes use of various media platforms including radio and television, engage with key stakeholders including parliamentarians and communities and participates in global conferences to highlight the key issues.
Zambia is a nutrition emergency country as described by WHO, with stunting rates recognized as among the highest in the region at 40%. In recent years, as the country attained a lower middle-income status, the rate of obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have increased creating a double burden on the already strained health system in the country. Around 23% of adult women are overweight or obese, and 8% of stunted children have an overweight mother.
Our role is to raise awareness and pressurize government and others to ensure much better funded and broad scale effective programmes to tackle undernutrition.
Our vision is to achieve a Zambia where every mother and child is assured of sufficient nutrition
